Capital Campaign Update

January 2018
January 4, 2018
Not only are we thankful for the birth of a Savior, and the new hope he provides, we also celebrate the many blessings which he has given. In 2018, Safe Haven looks forward to a new facility, and an increased capacity to serve more individuals.
The goal of our Capital Campaign is to double the capacity of our emergency shelter, strengthen the services we offer, and empower an increased number of individuals and families who have experienced domestic abuse.
Initial estimates, including but not limited to construction, did not fully reflect the actual cost needed to fulfill the goals of the campaign. The realistic goal of Safe Haven’s Empowering the Journey Campaign is $5.5 million. We are thrilled to announce that over the past few months, we have received more than $2.6 million through gifts, pledges, and grants. When added to the sale of the shelter, gifts in kind, and what had been previously raised, we are excited to announce that we have reached $4.5 million toward our goal!
We recently signed the construction contract with Rockford Construction and we will break ground for our new facility in March 2018, as soon as the ground thaws.
Please continue to keep Safe Haven, our staff, and clients in your prayers as we work to expand and help create a stronger and healthier community in which no one will have to experience domestic abuse.
It is our prayer that in the new year, hope will be experienced by all, especially to those whose lives have been impacted by domestic abuse.

Thank you for your support in helping make this possible.

A Note from Megan Hopkins

1 Chronicles 16:8 says, “Give praise to the Lord, call upon his name, make known… what he has done.”

It is with thankfulness and praise, that I am pleased to announce we have received $545,000 in campaign commitments in June! Let us celebrate together the wonderful works of the Lord and proclaim his faithfulness. It is evident that the Lord is near to this project…a project that will have positive impact on women, children, and our community.

Thank you all for your contributions over the years and most recently, which have helped us reach this milestone today… preparing to serve in a brand new facility, that will allow us to provide more services to our clients and the greater Grand Rapids community.

Capital Campaign Statistics

AHP: Affordable Housing Program Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis

  • We can increase our chances of receiving this $500,000 grant by demonstrating readiness to proceed with construction, and doing so requires additional cash and pledges of at least $975,000 by September 1, 2017. Safe Haven’s application was self-scored at 75 points. The highest score of successful applications in the last three years, was 65. Although the grant is not guaranteed, we feel confident in our chances to be awarded, which will be announced on September 9 2017.

Prayer Requests & Praises:

  • Prayer that we will receive the AHP grant in September
  • Praise for new commitments and partnerships formed
  • Continued prayers for the upcoming opportunities to share information about Safe Haven with donors, faith communities, and those coming to prevention & education events
  • Prayers for the families and children we are currently serving, and those who are not able to receive care

Thank you again for your time and commitment!

A Note from Megan Hopkins

Dear Friends,

I truly thank God in all my remembrance of you, always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you…and I am confident of this: that He who began a good work will perfect it until the day of Jesus Christ. (adapted from Phil. 1:3-11).

Stepping into the role as Interim Executive Director is truly a blessing. It is an honor to be serving our community in this capacity and having a positive and lasting impact on the lives of so many families and children. Thank you for being part of our journey moving forward to expand our ability to serve more families and children and provide more resources to our greater Grand Rapids community to help prevent domestic violence.

Below, I provide an update on our Capital Campaign, and again thank you for your interest, support, and prayers in our goal to be under one roof, with the ability to serve more of those in need right here in our community.

Campaign Milestones

  • With pledges, gifts received, and other assets (i.e. the current shelter) we are pleased to announce that we are at $2.4 million to date for the Capital Campaign.
  • We recently submitted an application for a grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis ($500,000). Our application appears to be very strong and we will hear if the grant will be awarded on September 8, 2017. This grant is not included in the $2.4 million indicated above.
  • During the next three months, the SHM board and staff will be working very hard to assemble an additional $1.5 million in support from our community, which would allow us to break ground in September.
  • I am pleased to report that Mercantile Bank has committed to provide construction and bridge financing for the project.
  • Rockford Construction is working with us to put out bids to vendors and sub contractors and we are looking to break ground in September.

Prayer Requests & Praises:

  • Continued prayers for the upcoming opportunities to share information about Safe Haven with donors, faith communities, and those coming to prevention & education event
  • Thanks for new partnerships formed to assist Safe Haven in moving forward

“And this I pray for you, that your love may abound still more and more in real and all discernment, so that you may approve the things that are excellent…having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.” (Phil. 1:3-11).

Thank you again for your time and commitment!

Warm regards,
