SUMMARY:Introduction to Violence Prevention Principles
DESCRIPTION:Violence is a significant problem that impacts all students and community members: 1 in 3 teens in relationships experience physical or sexual violence from a romantic partner\, 1 in 4 Kent County teens is aware of at least one friend who is experiencing dating abuse\, and 1 in 10 Michigan teens have skipped school because they feel unsafe. While the problem is significant\, the good news is that there are steps we can take to prevent all forms of violence before they ever occur. \nThis session will provide school support staff\, teachers\, and administrators with foundational knowledge and skills related to preventing violence perpetration and victimization in K-12 schools. Participants will become familiar with the dynamics of teen dating abuse\, increase their knowledge and skills to support students who experience dating violence\, build an understanding of the public health approach to violence prevention\, and apply prevention principles to their specific contexts. \nThis training will be held at Safe Haven Ministries (2627 Birchcrest Drive SE\, Grand Rapids) in the Learning Center. Parking on site is limited; overflow parking is available across the street behind Pietro’s Italian Restaurant. Attendees must use the upper entrance and will be required to sign a confidentiality form to protect the privacy of the individuals seeking services at Safe Haven. The main doors are accessible via ramp and an elevator is available to access the lower level. \nREGISTER HERE

DESCRIPTION:February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness month\, and all month long Young Leaders Against Violence (YLAV) will be sending the message that Love Shouldn’t Hurt\, culminating in a live panel event on February 23 at 6pm. Register online to attend via Zoom or watch on Facebook live. \n\n\nUnfortunately\, 1 in 3 teens in relationships experience sexual abuse\, physical abuse\, or threats of physical abuse. Whether you are a parent\, teacher\, or friend\, recognizing abuse and knowing how to support teens who experience it can be challenging. We want to give you tools to help. \n\n\nOur panel will discuss the importance of talking about teen dating violence\, what various forms of abuse look like\, and what you can do to support someone experiencing teen dating violence. This event will take place on Zoom and be livestreamed to Facebook. \n\n\nYLAV is a group of Kent County teens dedicated to both bringing awareness to and preventing dating and sexual abuse.
