Safe Haven is looking for a relational and innovative individual to join our mission to prevent and end relationship abuse and human trafficking. The Community Advocacy Manager will build collaborative relationships within the Kent County law enforcement and legal systems in order to expand trauma informed access to victims and survivors of human trafficking, domestic violence and exploitation. This role will have a particular focus on enhancing the collaborative relationship between law enforcement and Safe Haven Ministries. This includes networking, building relationships, offering community awareness presentations and participating in training law enforcement departments on human trafficking, domestic violence and exploitation. 

An ideal candidate would be someone with a strong skillset in providing trauma informed care for survivors of human trafficking, domestic violence and exploitation. Someone who can provide direct advocacy services for survivors, but who is also a skilled communicator and will thrive in an environment where they are often leading multiple initiatives simultaneously. Given that this role will have direct service and legal focused training components, a background in legal advocacy, social work, case management and/or clinical work is strongly desired. This role will be responsible for the supervision of the mobile advocate–and ideally would have experience supervising or supporting other roles in an organization. 


Safe Haven Ministries—a nonprofit organization located in Grand Rapids, Michigan—believes in a multi-faceted approach to serving victims/survivors of relationship abuse and human trafficking and preventing violence in our community. Safe Haven offers comprehensive residential and non-residential services; confidential emergency shelter for individuals and families fleeing domestic violence; psycho-educational support groups; individual case management and advocacy; and primary prevention training and outreach for the entire community.


  • Assist victims of human trafficking, domestic violence, and exploitation understand and navigate the legal system
  • Provide victim’s rights information and community resource connection to victims of domestic violence, exploitation, and human trafficking
  • Work closely with law enforcement to provide education and agency collaboration related to victims of human trafficking, domestic violence and exploitation
  • Facilitate human trafficking, domestic violence and exploitation community awareness presentations and trainings for law enforcement and other community partners
  • Provide trauma informed and survivor centered advocacy for human trafficking survivors
  • Supervise and support agency’s mobile advocate
  • Ensure appropriate and timely data collection, maintain case notes and complete client files
  • Assist victims of human trafficking, domestic violence, and exploitation file victim compensation claims
  • Provide victim referrals for services necessary to recover from or prevent victimization
  • Complete accurate and timely documentation in agency’s client database 
  • Work in collaboration with Kent County’s law enforcement agencies
  • Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings and any other meetings as needed
  • Allow flexibility in scheduling and job function
  • Maintain confidential files and keep confidentiality of crime victims
  • Maintain respectful attitude toward program participants and co-workers
  • Must adhere to all safety and security policies and identify and correct security breaches to assure a safe place for guests and colleagues 
  • Other tasks as assigned by supervisor


  • Professional Skills: Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Human Services or Criminal Justice or a paralegal degree from an accredited program
  • Experience working within law enforcement and legal systems
  • Active listening, crisis intervention, and problem resolutions skills
  • Experience facilitating trainings and community awareness presentations
  • Proven success coaching or supervising professional staff
  • Ability to work independently and as a team
  • Flexibility to work some nontraditional hours as needed
  • Excellent written and oral communication skill
  • A commitment to continued research, training, and education on issues of domestic violence, human trafficking, and social work
  • Must display professionalism and leadership qualities with strong abilities to adapt, prioritize and demonstrate flexibility as needed
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to communicate with individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds
  • Computer skills: Utilize a personal computer and familiar with Microsoft Office
  • Reliable access to own transportation
