GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — During Gun Violence Awareness Month, a fellow in residence at Safe Haven Ministries spoke about the social drivers of teen gun violence and where he sees critical gaps in prevention.
Tony Tendero said trauma and adverse childhood experiences often impact a young person’s empathy, impulse control and problem-solving ability — factors that increase their risk of engaging in violence. But strong community connections, caring adult relationships and healthy social norms act as protective barriers.
“Protective factors are baked into the community — whether it’s a team, a caring adult or clear norms around conflict,” he said.
When it comes to gun access, Tendero said it’s crucial to make sure people with a prior domestic violence conviction no longer have access to firearms.
“Access to a gun is a major red flag in lethality assessments,” he said.
Tendero emphasized the role of schools, families and local groups in prevention efforts. He cited three key areas: building community connectedness, meeting basic needs like housing and food, and improving access to mental health care.
