JOB TITLE: Child and Youth Services Coordinator
SUPERVISED BY: Director of Client Services
HOURS & STATUS: Full time, 40 hours per week, non-exempt. Monday, Wednesday, Friday 8am – 5pm, Tuesdays & Thursdays 12:30pm-8pm, with some flexibility and occasional weekends
SALARY & BENEFITS: $22.00-$25.00 per hour (pay differential for bilingual candidates); generous PTO; 11 Paid holidays; health, dental benefits and HSA with employee match; Simple IRA with employee contribution.
Position Overview
The Child & Youth Services Coordinator will serve as the agency’s youth and children’s programming advocate. The Child and Youth Services Coordinator will lead children’s programming activities that address social and emotional learning, and support parents with trauma-informed activities to enhance healthy parenting skills. The Child and Youth Services Coordinator will develop and deliver psycho-educational support groups for parents and youth, and provide one-on-one advocacy for youth and parents who are engaged in Safe Haven’s programming.

Safe Haven Ministries—a nonprofit organization located in Grand Rapids, Michigan—believes in a multi-faceted approach to serving victims/survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking. Safe Haven offers comprehensive residential and non-residential services; confidential emergency shelter for individuals and families fleeing domestic violence and human trafficking; housing support; psycho-educational support groups; individual case management and advocacy; and primary prevention training and outreach for the entire community.
Summary of Duties (Essential Functions)
- Develop and implement age-appropriate activities for children and youth that help to promote social-emotional learning and parent-child engagement opportunities
- Plan, organize and facilitate activities for children within residential and nonresidential programming, and support advocates in their work with families
- Lead children’s programming facilitation and develop weekly topics and activities
- Enhance and develop curriculum for children and youth programming
- Develop and foster relationships with community partners to increase and enhance referral resources and support for children, youth and families
- Provide supervision and support to children’s programming staff and volunteers during children’s programming that runs during adult support groups
- Provide parenting education and support to non-offending parents, modeling behavior when appropriate
- Collaborate with advocate staff on child and youth advocacy needs, providing support to advocates and clients around parenting and connection to resources
- Provide crisis response and advocacy support as needed such as the crisis hotline
- Strive to create a caring and safe environment marked by empathy, understanding and acceptance
- Clean, organize and maintain the toys and room where children’s activities are held
- Ensure appropriate and timely collection of client registration and data entry
- Observe professional confidentiality; protect the rights of clients and their families and observe the Safe Haven Ministries Code of Ethics at all times
- Provide training and coaching for children’s programming staff & volunteers
- Engage in training and maintain required training and certifications required for role
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required or Preferred
- Bachelor’s Degree in social work or related field preferred. Will consider relevant experience in lieu of bachelor’s degree
- Background in child development preferred
- Bilingual (English and Spanish) strongly preferred
- Experience providing children’s programming support for children and youth
- Must be able to demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to work with minors of various ages and backgrounds
- Understanding of trauma-informed practices when supporting children and youth strongly preferred
- Knowledge of the dynamics of domestic violence and/or human trafficking; previous work with domestic violence preferred
- Active listening, crisis intervention, and problem-resolution skills
- Ability to work independently and as a team
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to communicate with individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds
- Reliable transportation
