JOB TITLE: Controller/Director of Finance

SUPERVISED BY: CEO

HOURS: Full-time, exempt position; 40 hours/week

Salary Range: $90-95,000

LOCATION: Grand Rapids, MI

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Safe Haven is seeking a Controller/Director of Finance who will oversee all aspects of financial management, including accounting, reporting, budgeting, compliance, and internal controls. Reporting to the CEO, this role will ensure the accuracy of financial reporting and enhance financial procedures to support the organization’s growth and sustainability.

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

Safe Haven Ministries—a nonprofit organization located in Grand Rapids, Michigan—believes in a multi-faceted approach to serving victims/survivors of domestic violence and preventing domestic violence in our community. Safe Haven offers comprehensive residential and non-residential services; confidential emergency shelter for women and children fleeing domestic violence; psycho-educational support groups; individual case management and advocacy; and primary prevention training and outreach for the entire community.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

  • Oversee the organization’s daily accounting and finance operations, ensuring adherence to US GAAP nonprofit accounting standards, IRS regulations, and grant requirements
  • Prepare and present financial statements, reports, and analyses to the executive team and board of directors.
  • Develop and oversee annual budgets, financial forecasting, and long-term financial planning ensuring alignment with organizational goals as well as funding requirements
  • Lead the annual audit process, liaising with external auditors and other stakeholders to ensure compliance
  • Maintain and enhance internal controls to safeguard the organization’s assets and ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and donor restrictions.
  • Manage and track grant funding and donations, ensuring proper allocation and reporting in accordance with donor and funder requirements.
  • Assist in preparing financial reports for grant applications, ensuring transparency and accountability.
  • Collaborate with leadership to provide financial insights, long-term financial strategies and recommendations.
  • Manage cash flow, investments, and financial risk mitigation strategies.
  • Manage and mentor the finance team, providing leadership, professional development, and guidance to ensure the department’s efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Work cross-functionally with Safe Haven Ministries Directors and programs to support their financial needs and ensure alignment with organizational priorities.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field. CPA or MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive accounting and finance, preferably in a nonprofit setting. Experience with diverse funding sources, including individual gifts, foundation gifts, and government grants, is highly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and regulatory requirements, including IRS tax regulations, government grant compliance, and donor reporting standards.
  • Experience managing audits, budgets, and financial reporting.
  • Strong proficiency in financial software and systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Excel, or similar nonprofit financial management systems). Experience with state and federal grant management systems is a plus.
  • Proven ability to lead, manage, and develop a team. Experience working with Boards and senior leadership.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present financial reports and concepts  to non-financial stakeholders. Strong ability to work collaboratively across departments
  • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
