Job Title: Family Advocate
Supervised By: Director of Client Services
Hours & Status: Full-time; Non-Exempt; This role has some evening work hours with the potential for 3 or 4 days 12:00pm – 8:30pm and 1 or 2 days 8am – 5pm; final schedule will be mutually agreed upon.
Salary & Benefits: $19.00 – $21.00 per hour with pay differential for bilingual staff; generous PTO; 11 Paid holidays; health, dental benefits and HSA with employee match; Simple IRA with employee contribution
POSITION OVERVIEW
Safe Haven Ministries is seeking a skilled and ambitious advocate with excellent relationship building skills and who has a desire to work across community systems to enhance victim services. This role will add to our diverse team of victim services professionals who share a dedication to support victims of domestic violence and human trafficking.
This Family Advocate role will work primarily with individuals and families impacted by domestic violence, supporting them in crisis, while also providing short-term and long-term case management for some of these individuals. This includes providing support to individuals reaching out for support via our hotline, chat and walk-in services, as well as ongoing one-on-one appointments. This includes helping individuals navigate the criminal justice process, providing emotional support, resource navigation and referrals and psycho-education around their victimization.
A successful candidate will have experience with crisis management and demonstrated success working with a wide range of individuals in an empathetic and supportive manner.
ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW
Safe Haven Ministries—a nonprofit organization located in Grand Rapids, Michigan—believes in a multi-faceted approach to serving victims/survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking. Safe Haven offers comprehensive residential and non-residential services; confidential emergency shelter for individuals and families fleeing domestic violence and human trafficking; housing support; psycho-educational support groups; individual case management and advocacy; and primary prevention training and outreach for the entire community.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES (Essential Functions)
● Provide supportive services to individuals experiencing domestic violence and human trafficking, including providing availability to clients that need evening appointments
● Provide crisis intervention, support, and referral to victims/survivors seeking support
● Complete appropriate assessments and goal-setting forms with clients
● Provide trauma-informed and comprehensive assessments, legal advocacy, and resource connection to all clients
● Facilitate psychoeducational support groups
● Be available to clients to discuss problems and concerns by using active listening, problem solving skills, and empathy in a professional manner
● Observe professional confidentiality; protect the rights of clients and their families and observe the Safe Haven Ministries Code of Ethics at all times
● Carry a rotating weekend on-call shift, approximately once every 8-11 weeks
● Supervise interns as assigned, including coaching and training
● Assist with onboarding of new staff including helping with shadow shifts
● Attend and participate in program meetings, weekly staff meetings, individual supervisions, staff in-services, and other meetings as assigned
● Ensure appropriate, timely data collection, maintain case notes & complete client files
● Strive to create a caring and safe environment marked by empathy, understanding, and acceptance
● Engage in ongoing professional development focused on strengthening skills to enhance the quality of care provided to clients
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED OR PREFERRED
● Bachelor’s Degree in social work strongly preferred. Will consider relevant experience in the right candidate in lieu of bachelor’s degree and/or other relevant fields of study
● Must be able to demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to work in various environments including residential, non-residential and community-based sites
● Availability to work evening or weekends when necessary
● Knowledge of the dynamics of domestic violence and/or human trafficking; previous work with domestic violence preferred
● Active listening, crisis intervention, and problem resolutions skills
● Ability to work independently and as a team
● Excellent written and oral communication skills
● Strong organizational and time management skills
● Ability to communicate with individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds
● Reliable transportation
