JOB TITLE: Shelter Assistant
SUPERVISED BY: Residential Program Manager
HOURS: Part-Time Non-Exempt; 16-24 hours per week
SALARY & BENEFITS: $17.00 per hour ($2/hr for Bilingual Abilities)
We are hiring for the following shifts:
Currently looking for coverage on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday from 4pm-12am including Sunday from 12pm-8pm.
Position Overview
Under general supervision of the Residential Program Manager, shelter assistants are responsible for crisis intervention and ensuring safety and security of the domestic violence emergency safe shelter. Shelter Assistants are also responsible for providing trauma-informed, client-centered supportive services as needed for residents and their children residing in Safe Haven’s shelter. This role also helps with general cleaning, room flips and inventory upkeep.

Safe Haven Ministries—a nonprofit organization located in Grand Rapids, Michigan—believes in a multi-faceted approach to serving victims/survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking, while also working to prevent violence in our community. Safe Haven offers confidential housing services; emergency safe shelter; individual case management; support groups; children’s programming; and primary prevention training and technical assistance for the entire community. Summary of Duties (Essential Functions)
Provide intensive crisis intervention, support, and referrals to individuals seeking assistance via its 24/7 hotline and web chat
Complete emergency intake and exit procedures, including intake coordination for referrals coming from the high risk team
Provide training and onboarding information to incoming shelter assistants through shadow shifts and other learning opportunities requested by supervisor
Maintain accurate data collection and documentation
Perform monitoring, support, and safety checks to ensure the overall health of shelter and clients
Learn and display Safe Haven Ministries mission and values
Help cultivate a culture of continuous learning, guidance, and skill development
Provide formal and informal support to promote a culture of radical hospitality for all shelter clients
Carry out tasks such as cleaning, sorting donations, taking inventory, and laundering to maintain a safe and organized shelter environment
Assist with seasonal maintenance tasks, including shoveling snow and salting designated areas
Attend and participate in monthly professional development sessions, individual supervision meetings, shelter assistant meetings, and other assigned meetings
Perform tasks as assigned by supervisor
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required or Preferred
High school diploma or GED required
Additional education in social work, psychology, or a related field preferred
Knowledge of domestic violence, human trafficking, and/or trauma dynamics strongly preferred
Required skills include active listening, crisis intervention, and trauma-informed conflict resolution
Strong organizational and administrative skills required
Ability to effectively communicate with individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds
Bilingual in Spanish is preferred, but not required
